McLoughlin Decorators win Johnstone's Painter of the Year 2023

McLoughlin Decorating Ltd has been named Supreme Winner at the 40th anniversary edition of the Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards.

This year’s highly anticipated ceremony was hosted at The Queen’s Hotel in Leeds, close to the PPG UK headquarters in Birstall, on Saturday 1 June 2024, and saw professionals from across the decorating industry come together to celebrate their work and vote for this year’s Supreme Winner.

The annual awards recognise the top talent from across the sector and highlight the very best work carried out over the past year. This year, 32 finalists competed across six categories: Commercial and Industrial, Education and Healthcare, Hospitality, Leisure and Retail, Residential, External Wall Insulation and Render. From the category winners, attendees on the night voted just one project to be crowned Supreme Winner.

The Supreme Winner

The Supreme Winner title was awarded to the winner of the Hospitality, Leisure and Retail category, McLoughlin Decorating Ltd, for its work on The Dorchester Hotel, London.

Through meticulous planning, remarkable craftsmanship, and unwavering dedication, the McLoughlin Decorating Ltd team transformed the hotel’s interiors using a range of Johnstone’s Trade paints, all while minimising disruption to staff and guests and maintaining the highest quality standards. The award-winning work is testament to the team’s commitment and ability to meet client expectations, even under complex conditions.

Megan Esmond, PPG Marketing Director, UK and Ireland, said: “A huge well done to the team at McLoughlin Decorating Ltd on being crowned Supreme Winner for 2023. Every year, the quality of entries improves, and this year was no exception – the team was up against some fierce competition so taking home the title is a true credit to the talent, skill and craftsmanship of those involved in completing this project to such a high standard.”

Category winners

Ian Williams Limited won the Commercial and Industrial category for the exterior redecoration of a 46-metre-high chimney at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth. The team worked tirelessly to ensure the general public and vehicles on the site were protected from any paint or falling debris, as well as dealing with the potential effects of high winds and coastal weather on the progress of the job.

Mackay Decorators Perth Ltd took home the Education and Healthcare category award for the conversion and complete redecoration of The National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh. The team worked around the clock, often working 60-hour weeks, to meet deadlines and deliver a high-quality finish in line with health, safety and security demands.

A Connolly Ltd triumphed in the External Wall Insulation category for upgrading the West Lancashire Borough Council Accommodation Blocks. The blocks needed a complete revamp – both internally and externally – and the list of works was extensive.

The Hospitality, Leisure and Retail category winner was McLoughlin Decorating Ltd, for the remarkable redecoration of The Dorchester Hotel, London. The team carried out the necessary works while the hotel remained open, working hard to ensure as little disruption as possible for guests and staff.

Paul Perkins Plastering was named winner of the Render category for the total renovation of the Ripon Hall Farm, Preston. The project required care while applying the product to ensure the finish was in keeping with stone detailing and was finished to a very high standard.

The Residential award was presented to M G Wynn Limited for restoring the exterior at Lypiatt House, Gloucestershire. The project took over 12 months to complete, and saw the team completely restore the exterior of this magnificent home to the highest standard.

Megan continued: “Hosting the Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards makes us incredibly proud, and it was fantastic to celebrate our 40th anniversary this year in Yorkshire!

“There was a great energy in the room, and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to reward decorators from across the UK for their outstanding work. Their dedication, perseverance and creativity are unquestionable, and the talent of decorators within our industry was clear to see in this year’s entries. Well done to every nominee, and huge congratulations to the Supreme and category winners.

Entries for Johnstone’s Painter of the Year 2024 are open now and we’re really looking forward to seeing everyone’s projects.”
